Fishing is one of many activities available at GweGwe, but it is by no means the main attraction. As part of the Mkambati Nature Reserve and its Marine Protected Area (MPA), GweGwe offers a light-touch, respectful approach to fishing — ideal for guests who enjoy a bit of casual angling, not those looking for a dedicated fishing destination.
Anglers with valid permits are welcome to enjoy catch-and-release or fish for the pot, provided all regulations are strictly followed. Fishing within an MPA is a privilege — one that can be easily revoked if abused.
As proud custodians of this extraordinary coastline, we ask our guests to support the conservation efforts that protect both land and sea. Rock lobster (crayfish) populations are under severe pressure along South Africa’s coast, with poaching being widespread. No crayfishing is permitted at GweGwe, ensuring this coastline remains a sanctuary for generations to come.
A fishing licence should be obtained in advance online from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment at an additional cost and printed out and brought along.
